If You Believe – Spring Performance 2025

We’re excited to be preparing our 4th Annual Spring Performance titled ‘If You Believe’. All performances will be hosted at the Yates Memorial Theatre and we’ve included important performance information needed to prepare your child for this exciting event

THEATRE DROP OFF/PICK UP
All rehearsals will be held onstage at the Yates Memorial Center. Students will be dropped off/picked up at the Backstage Door located on the South/West side of the building by the City Hall Loop.   This will be the same drop off location for our performances as well.

Performance Pick up will be as follows:
Show #1 will pick up from the stage (similar to the Winter Showcase)or the backstage door if you’re not in the theatre watching
Show #2 will pick up from the backstage door.

Please note: Parents/guardians will NOT be allowed backstage at drop off for both rehearsals and performances. This helps volunteers with student organization and can also assist younger students with their readiness for stage.  If you have a tentative child, please be sure to communicate that you will NOT be joining them backstage. This can really make a difference at drop off when they understand the process ahead of time.

THEATRE ETIQUETTE
Any time spent in the Theatre is special and we want to ensure that students have the best experience possible.  We ask that students only bring what is necessary to the theatre and do not bring expensive personal items.  Students will be expected to sit quietly as they wait to perform and will be welcome to watch the other dances when there is time. Food and Beverage are only allowed in designated areas and students are not allowed to snack while wearing their wardrobe pieces.

VOLUNTEERS
With over 180 students this season, we require the help from parent volunteers for both our rehearsals and performances. Rehearsals will require 5-6 volunteers backstage and our performances require 10-12 parent volunteers (ushering/front of house, backstage, general supervision)
Please consider signing up as a volunteer as it helps students have an organized and positive experience at the theatre. Please let us know if you have any questions and anyone interested in Volunteering can reach out to Miss Claire by email at info@hapticdancearts.com

SEWING AND WARDROBE VOLUNTEERS
We are always in need of help with sewing and wardrobe preparations for our performances.  This can be anything from cutting material, prepping headpieces or altering skirts or pants. Some items can be picked up from studio and worked on at home, and we’re also planning and in studio wardrobe night on Tuesday April 8th & April 15th from 7:30pm-9:30pm. This will primarily be cutting material, assisting with hangers, labels and general wardrobe preparations. We would love 3-4 volunteers to assist in studio those nights if possible.  Please reach out if you have time and interest in helping out in any way.

THEATRE REHEARSALS (schedules found below)

Theatre rehearsals are an important time for students to familiarize with the theatre, practice backstage etiquette and prepare for their performance through onstage spacing, rehearsal and understand entrances/exits.  We ask that you keep students personal items to a minimum as it helps our volunteers keep things organized backstage and ensures special items aren’t misplaced or forgotten.

  • Please send your child dressed in their basic blacks with hair done properly and their required shoes.
  • Students are asked to arrive at the scheduled time and be ready to dance.
  • Be sure to provide extra time before your listed rehearsal should students need time to get ready at the theatre
  • Students are welcome to be dropped off earlier than their listed time and should plan to stay at the theatre should they have multiple rehearsal times.
  • Rehearsals are closed to viewing. Only Instructors, students and volunteers will be allowed in the theatre during rehearsals as it is an important for students to familiarize with the theatre without the distraction of an audience.
  • Students participating in more than one rehearsal should  be sent with a small nut free snack.  Please consider sending snacks that are easy to eat and not too messy!

PERFORMANCE ATTIRE
A part of the Haptic Dance Arts philosophy is keeping our performances simple.  Instead of costumes, we provide a simple wardrobe for the stage. Students are required to wear their own basic black bodysuit which helps create a uniform look while ensuring students are in something they’re comfortable with. Additional black basics may be requested depending on your child’s class.

Bodysuits should be all black and can be tank, short or long sleeve. Black Mesh and Black Velvet are acceptable however we do not want any color or gemstones on the bodysuits.  We also request the bodysuit to have no attached skirt as students will have wardrobe pieces to use overtop of their basic black.

We encourage students to wear their show basic blacks to their regular classes through the month of April as a way for the children to become comfortable in their attire prior to the show. Required attire and footwear can be found on the next page.

HAIR, MAKEUP & HYGIENE
Hair
: We ask that students choose a preferred hairstyle that has a clean and polished look. Hair should be pulled off the face in a bun, braids or tidy pony (depending on the length). We do not require students to change their hair between numbers so be sure to secure hair for the evening.  It’s best to send students to their dress rehearsal with their hair properly done as a practice for their show nights. Acro students should consider low pony or French/Dutch braids to allow them to comfortably execute their tricks.  Hip Hop students should consider haristyles that will allow for hats or accessories.

Makeup:  Light Make up is encouraged for our students and  should be simple to enhance the natural features of the face. Theatre lights have a tendency to ‘wash out’ features so we recommend simple mascara, light blush, and a pink to red lipstick. Students with very light features might consider darkening their brows as well.  Please ask if you need assistance or direction when it comes to makeup.  We’re happy to provide any help we can!

Hygiene: Students will be working hard at the theatre and it can get very hot under the theatre lights.  Be sure to send them with water, hand sanitizers and any personal deodorant that might be needed to ensure they are comfortable. We ask that students leave all jewelry at home and be sure to remove any nail polish before the shows.

*Please ensure that all tights/shoes are labelled with your child’s first and last name or initials. Students should plan to bring their items in a bag in order to stay organized while at the theatre
